TASK 1: The line graph shows the prison population in a European country between 1911 and 2001

IELTS Writing Task 1 – Band 6.0-6.5
The line graphs show the prison population of males and females in a European country between 1911 and 2001.
Overall, the number of male prisoners increased significantly over the given period, whereas the female prison population saw a general decline, despite some fluctuations.
In the male prison population graph, the figure started at about 20,000 in 1911 and remained relatively stable until 1931. After a slight decrease to around 10,000 in 1941, the numbers fluctuated slightly and started to rise steadily from 1971 onwards. By 2001, the male prison population had reached around 45,000.
In contrast, the female prison population started at about 3,000 in 1911 but dropped sharply to about 500 by 1951. After that, the number of female prisoners fluctuated, showing some increase in 1961 and 1981 but remaining much lower than the male population. By 2001, the female prison population had risen slightly to around 3,000, still far below the number of male prisoners.
In summary, while the male prison population increased steadily over time, the female prison population declined overall, though it showed some upward trends towards the end of the period.
IELTS Writing Task 1 – Band 7.0-7.5
The line graphs illustrate the prison populations of males and females in a European country from 1911 to 2001.
Overall, the male prison population experienced a consistent upward trend, whereas the female population exhibited a notable decline before stabilizing with some fluctuations towards the latter part of the period.
In more detail, the number of male prisoners began at around 20,000 in 1911 and fluctuated minimally over the next 50 years, with a slight dip to approximately 10,000 in 1941. However, starting in 1971, the male prison population rose significantly, reaching a peak of nearly 45,000 by 2001.
On the other hand, the female prison population demonstrated a sharp decline from around 3,000 in 1911 to a low point of about 500 in 1951. After that, the numbers fluctuated, with increases in 1961 and 1981, but the overall trend remained much lower than that of males. By 2001, the female prison population had climbed back to approximately 3,000.
In conclusion, while the male prison population saw a dramatic rise during the century, the female prison population declined sharply in the first half of the period, followed by moderate growth in later years, although it remained significantly lower than the male figures.
IELTS Writing Task 1 – Band 8.0-8.5
The two line graphs present data on the prison populations of males and females in a European country over a 90-year period from 1911 to 2001.
It is clear that the male prison population followed a steadily increasing trajectory throughout the period, whereas the female prison population saw a dramatic decline in the early years, followed by a more stable pattern with some fluctuations in later decades.
In terms of male prisoners, the numbers remained relatively stable at around 20,000 between 1911 and 1931, but there was a dip to roughly 10,000 by 1941. From 1971 onwards, the male prison population experienced a sharp and steady rise, culminating in a peak of approximately 45,000 by 2001.
In contrast, the female prison population decreased dramatically from 3,000 in 1911 to a low of around 500 by 1951. This was followed by fluctuations in subsequent decades, with a moderate increase in 1961, a decline in 1981, and a steady rise towards 2001, when the population returned to its original level of about 3,000.
To conclude, the male prison population rose steadily over the century, while the female population followed a more complex pattern, initially decreasing sharply before gradually recovering.
Key Differences in Band Levels:
